PHEW! I may be the slowest reader in the world but I finally finished this one and I’m left with a few thoughts, not a lot, but a few so here they are:

Personas are helpful, and a pretty powerful tool to use on the general population :)

A persona is created in order to design something that will be successful when it is thrown out into the world. A persona is never just one person, ever. It would never work. If you design a persona for one person then only the one person will like the product. If you use lots and lots of humans and create a persona from their own habits and hobbies and jazz, then that is when a person will be successful and affect the audience in the intended way.

Personas are important. You can test them out which is super sweet and see if they will work, definitely a plus in this crazy world when people’s minds change so quickly.

Reading: Sagmeister and Emotion

Sagmeister explains and breaks down one by one what it means to create design that is emotional, something that when you look at it you feel something. There is a lot of excellent design, but there is not emotion attached. Sagmeister uses the example of getting a swag (stufff we all get…a bad joke from the office :) ) bag from an AIGA conference. Everything in it was designed well, but was boring and predictable. Not an attention grabber.

Sagmeister says that when he has an emotional connection with his own work he feels that it will resonate with his audience and they will feel this too. Going back to the boring AIGA swag bag with this supposedly boring design work, Sagmeister explains what he believes are the six main steps that will allow a designer to create work that makes their audience actually feel something: offer a new perspective, trigger memories from the past, expose passion and guts (!), surprise/show the view something new, design/demonstrate truth and beauty. He does admit that these are only suggestions, and may or may not be tied to your own work.

so heres some spreads i’ve made. im slowly getting through the photos so a lot of from the same people/families, but once they’re all edited down it will be more diverse once i get through all of the folders in my thesis folder. PHEW! also, PLEASE someone suggest something other than future. ive overused this and i think its near its death for me. ;)

I have been working on editing the photos and laying them out in spreads. I am thinking of spliting the book into sections such as -Youth Dreams-Innocence-Intentions-Gros Bisous- I’m not sure what I would want to call them, but they would all be of the same idea/theme. I have mixed and matched pictures and words so the word may not go directly to that photo, but I edited them how I saw could work. Here’s some photo’s I’m working on, thinking of making a whole chapter of somehting along these lines…

Ethnography: practice of observing and participating in a culture in order to try and uncover what people are doing and what the doing or activity means to them. Important stuff for everyone to know. The more knowledge known about a specific area or community, the more it will effect and reveal the choices about content, hierarchy, form, and with this it allows the designer to better communicate with the audience they intended to reach.

The idea of a directed story telling session is pretty brilliant. It allows all information that needs to be known be told. This is clearly depending on the person asking questions, but with the right questions it can allow the group to gather enough information to see patterns, clusters, and common themes to create a model/framework of what they want to design.

IMPROVE BLACKBOARD. Please. Really. It is the most terrible interaction design, ever. Since BB is supposed to be a way of communicating within college courses it should be easy to use, everything there for you to find. But that isn’t the case. I’m glad this was studied because it severely needs help.
